Bottle or sprinkler

Savona, probably, c. 1601 - 1699

19.6cm (height)

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

With its long tapering neck and small opening, this piece was perhaps used as a sprinkler. The design of birds and flowers is derived from Chinese porcelain and the form is also derived from Oriental models. The supposition that it may have been specifically made for the Eastern market is made plausible by the provenance. The base is marked with the arms of the town of Savona.

Presented by C. D. E. Fortnum, 1888.  WA1888.CDEF.C502
