Dish with a woman dreaming

Deruta, c. 1540 - 1550

33.4 cm (diameter)

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

A woman lies dreaming while Cupid aims an arrow at her. The inscription, in a mixture of Latin and Italian, reads IO DORMIIVT ET LOCORE VIGILA (I sleep and my heart keeps watch); the text is a garbled version of a passage in the Song of Solomon, chapter 5, verse 2.

Purchased, 1932.  WA1932.221
