Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836 - 1912)

A Corner of the Gardens of the Villa Borghese

A1022a; oil on canvas, mounted as a drawing; 34.9 x 22 cm

Signed and dated: L. Alma-Tadema 1876

Prov: George Henschel; Lord Blanesburgh

Presented by Miss Sylvia Gosse, 1966; WA1966.13.1

Swanson 1990, no. 202

During a visit to Rome from December 1875 to April 1876, Alma-Tadema collected material for future paintings and made three studies of unassuming parts of the city, including two in the gardens of the Villa Borghese. This one, completed on 2 April 1876, is reminiscent of Velàzquez's celebrated study in the same garden (Prado).
