Edouard Vuillard (1868 - 1940)

Le Déjeuner

A1190; oil on canvas; 20 x 45 cm

Prov: Sam Salz; Mrs Hugh Neame

Accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of Mrs Eve Tooth and allocated to the Ashmolean Museum, 1994; WA1994.3

Vuillard painted many scenes of domestic life which feature his relatives and friends in an intimate setting. This represents his mother, a seamstress, who was a frequent model. The matt colour and flat patterned manner are characteristic of his work in the 1890s.
