In 1908 Kandinsky and his pupil and companion Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) moved to Murnau in Bavaria, where he begun to paint a series of landscapes inspired by the nearby Staffelsee and its surrounding mountains in fluid brush-strokes and dark colours.
