Eugène Louis Boudin (1824-1898):
Berck, cloudy Landscape
A1163; oil on canvas; 55 x 75 cm.
Signed and dated: E. Boudin 82; and inscribed: Berck 19 Juillet.
Bequeathed by Mr & Mrs Francis Hock, through The Art Fund, 1988; WA1988.291.
Views in and around the village of Berck in northern France appear in many of the artist's paintings from 1870 until his death in 1898. This view across the dunes is precisely dated. The unbroken horizon and solitary figure in the foreground emphasize the windswept emptiness of the site.
