David Adolphe Constant Artz (1837 - 1890):
Two Girls on the Dunes, bleaching
A1179; oil on panel; 16.5 x 23 cm.
Bequeathed by Professor Edith Bulbring, 1993; WA1993.416.
Artz was the most gifted pupil of Jozef Israels, uncle of the donor, and a prominent member of the Hague School of painters in the second half of the 19th century. An inscribed label on the back of the panel suggests the subject might be an illustration of a book of poems by the popular Dutch writer, Nicolaas Beets.
