The collection of Greek and Roman sculpture and inscriptions is the earliest in Britain, and was largely formed in the 17th century by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel. Sir Arthur Evans again was responsible for the creation of an outstanding collection of Greek painted pottery. High points of the classical Greek collections are the Thracian and Scythian grave groups from Dalboki and Nymphaeum, which contain important gold and silver items. Another strength is the collection of Greek and Roman gems and finger rings.
