The collections in the Department of Western Art cover 800 years and a wide range of materials. They include paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, silver, textiles and musical instruments.

Curatorial Responsibilities

The curatorial responsibilities of the members of the Department, with a selection of recent or pending publications specifically on the Museum collections, are as follows:

Catherine Whistler, Acting Keeper
Italian and Spanish paintings, drawings and prints; French art before 1800; textiles.
Timothy Wilson, Barrie and Deedee Wigmore Research Keeper
Sculpture; ceramics; metalwork; jewellery; glass, furniture.
Colin Harrison, Senior Curator of European Art
British paintings, drawings and prints; European art after 1800, including the Pissarro Family Archive; miniatures; musical instruments.
Matthew Winterbottom, Curator
of late 19th-century British sculpture and decorative arts
Jon Whiteley (retired end 2013), Honorary Curator
Working on exhibition and research projects.
