Education

An integral part of the University of Oxford, the Ashmolean produces scholarship of the highest standard.

But our commitment to education extends far beyond the academic community, and every year the Education team delivers a programme of activities for:

  • Many thousands of school children to participate in gallery activities and handling sessions
  • Families to enjoy workshops and weekend drop-in events
  • Adults to attend lectures, talks and study days
  • Visitors with special needs to take part in a range of activities
  • Community groups to get involved at the Museum or through community centres, schools, and hospitals

Exhibitions

The Ashmolean's exciting and varied annual programme of exhibitions makes our rich collections of art and archaeology widely available for study, enjoyment, and inspiration.

Exhibitions also provide public access to private collections held by the University of Oxford, and by individuals and institutions around the world.

Larger temporary exhibition galleries and better facilities in the new building enable the Ashmolean to hold major international exhibitions, but there are still many costs to be met.

Conservation

The Conservation team analyses, preserves, and treats the 1 million objects in its care according to the highest standards of contemporary conservation science and ethics.

There is particular emphasis on preventive conservation and an ongoing programme of environmental improvement throughout the Museum.

Our conservators balance this work with object and collections-led research, the supervision of graduate students, and the preparation of objects for exhibitions in the Ashmolean and around the world.
