Cast Gallery - Research Administrator and Curatorial Assistant

Salary Grade 6: £27,328 to £32,600 p.a. (pro rata)
We expect to appoint at the lower end of the grade.
Fixed term for 6 months –maternity cover

The Ashmolean's Cast Gallery is one of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved collections of casts of Greek and Roman sculpture in the UK. It contains some 1000 plaster casts of statues, reliefs, and architectural sculpture. The collection is particularly strong in Classical sculpture, but also has important Hellenistic and Roman material – including iconic pieces such as the Venus di Milo and the Nike of Samothrace. The gallery today is much loved by visitors, keenly used by schools and university students of archaeology, art history, ancient history and classics, and has been a regular resource for film documentaries. It sustains a regular programme of guided tours, educational activities and volunteer training.

You will be based in the Ashmolean and will assist in all aspects of the Cast Gallery's work – researching objects, renewing labels, maintaining databases, facilitating accessions, managing accounts, training volunteers, giving tours of the Gallery, and liaising with conservators, visitors, and the public. You will be responsible for providing curatorial, administrative, and research support for the Keeper of the Cast Gallery.

You will have a PhD in Classical Archaeology and/or Art, a proven record of academic research in Classical Art, and hands-on experience of Museum objects and their scholarship. You will also have relevant administrative experience, excellent IT skills and reading knowledge of French, German, and Italian. You will work flexibly and independently, using your academic knowledge and organizational skills.

Development Assistant - Ashmolean Museum

Salary Grade 4: £20,989 - £24,298 with discretionary range to £26,537 p.a.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the country’s most successful higher education fundraising team, and contribute to its current campaign – the largest and most ambitious in Europe, which has a goal of £3bn.

We're looking for a highly versatile and motivated team player to join the Ashmolean Museum Development team in this key administration role. Flexible, adaptable and able to respond to changing priorities, you will provide vital administrative support to the Ashmolean’s Development team. Your role will also encompass tasks such as drafting correspondence and arranging mailings, database entry and creating reports, helping arrange events, taking minutes at meetings, helping with travel arrangements, processing gifts and ad hoc projects.

Strong administrative and systems skills, attention to detail and an ability to multi-task and manage a varied workload are pivotal to the success of this role. You will have several years’ work experience and be used to working with a number of stakeholders: for this role this will include a wide range of internal colleagues from Finance to curatorial staff, supporters and volunteers of the University and the general public. With excellent communication skills, a flair for organisation and capable of acting on your own initiative you will play a key role in a busy team. Experience of Microsoft Office and CRM systems is vital.

Research Fellow, Oxford-Paris Alexander Project (OPAL)

Salary Grade 7: £30,738 - £37,768 p.a. (pro rata) Part Time (0.7 FTE)
Fixed term for 16 months
Post available from the 1 April 2016

The Research Fellow will be responsible for cataloguing the collection of coins in the name of Alexander the Great and Philip Arrhidaeus in the Heberden Coin Room of the Ashmolean Museum for contribution to the international collaborative PELLA project (numismatics.org/pella). They will additionally be responsible for liaising with colleagues in Oxford and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris concerning the development of descriptive standards within the framework of the nomisma.org project and the Numismatic Description Standard (NUDS). The research Fellow will also be responsible, in collaboration with other OPAL team members, for the organization of a conference to be held in Oxford in March/April 2017.

Applications are sought from those with a doctorate relating to Hellenistic Greek numismatics, either completed or due to be completed before February 2016, with experience of identifying and describing Hellenistic royal coinages, relevant computing skills, and reading knowledge of Ancient Greek and at least three modern languages.

Butler & Levett Curator of Classical Greece

Salary Grade 8: £38,896 - £46,414 p.a. Full time
Fixed term for 2 years from appointment

The postholder, on a fixed-term contract for two years within the Ashmolean's Department of Antiquities, will curate the Classical Greek collections. In particular s/he will create a digital catalogue of the Department's Black and Red Figure vases and sherds and plan a paper/digital publication for more general audiences.

S/he will also, under the direction of the Keeper, take a full part in the curatorial work relating to the Department's Classical Greek collections. This includes the Greek gallery and Greek-related exhibitions and the promotion of the collections through lectures, teaching and provision of access. S/he will work with colleagues in other Departments/faculties to ensure the success of the project, in line with the Museum's stated aims and procedures in areas such as digitisation.

The successful post-holder will have a Masters, preferably Doctoral, degree, proven experience in the study and display of Black and Red Figure vases, and excellent organizational skills, of self and of others. S/he will have proven ability to carry out high quality research in this field, (preferably in areas other than pure iconography or attribution) and the ability to communicate effectively and lucidly the results of this research, at least in part through University teaching or similar. S/he will have relevant administrative experience, excellent IT skills and a reading knowledge of French, German, Greek (ancient or modern) or Italian.
