This animation was created by Taylor Moon, a Ruskin MFA Art student at Oxford in 2019.

It was inspired by a Spanish cylindrical ivory casket (pyxis) lid in n the Ashmolean collection. Carved with huntsmen and animals, it dates from 389 in the Islamic calendar, or 998-999 CE.

The same object features in an Open Arts film, where Francesca Leoni (Curator of Islamic Art) discusses it’s history, use and and significance.
