This small co-curated exhibition will showcase a collection of objects related to Jainism, an ancient Indian religion that was founded more than 2,500 years ago.
The display features sculptures and paintings from the Ashmolean that have never been shown to the public before. It aims to provide an overview of Jain beliefs and values.
Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, dating back to the sixth century BCE, making it as old as Buddhism. At its core, Jainism teaches the values of non-violence, self-discipline, and the quest for enlightenment. Followers believe that true freedom and happiness come from living ethically and leading a life of simplicity.
With around four million followers, Jains honour 24 enlightened teachers known as Jinas or Tirthankaras. These figures serve as inspirations for Jains in their spiritual journey.
