With David Boyd Haycock, art historian and curator
David will trace Sickert's journey from talented protégé of James McNeill Whistler to founder of the Camden Town Group, revealing how he and his friends forged a distinctly British response to French Impressionism.
The Brighton Pierrots, 1915, Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942). Oil on canvas. WA2001.29
The talk will explore the influence of his French friends Edgar Degas and Jacques-Émile Blanche, his fascination with the theatrical and the everyday, his role as a critic, and the sometimes unsettling subject matter that continues to provoke debate today.
Focusing on a number of significant works by Sickert in the Ashmolean collection, this lecture will offer a vivid introduction to an artist who helped bring Impressionism to Britain.
