One-day practical session in the Ashmolean Learning Studio.

Tickets are £165 for the one-day session. Booking is essential.

Please note tickets will be available shortly.

With Dr Lynn Hulse, textile historian & embroidery expert

In this hands-on workshop to celebrate the themes of love and legacy, you’ll be invited to embroider one of May Morris’s lover’s knot or Celtic knot designs from the Ashmolean collection.

Working in silks or crewel wools on a linen ground, you will create a border for a workbag or evening bag, using a variety of decorative stitches commonly found in art embroidery of the late 19th century.

Richly embroidered table cover in silks and reds and greens, designed by May Morris

Table cover designed by May Morris and stitched by Alice Georgiana Balfour, polychrome silks on Morris & Co. Oak silk damask, c.1900. Private collection

This is a practical workshop. All stitching materials will be provided in the form of a kit which will enable you to complete the design after learning the techniques and starting the embroidery in class.

This event is part of our Love & Legacy season of events.
