With Martin Beek, artist and art historian
The first of these two talks by Martin Beek explores the Camden Town group of post-Impressionist artists from 1911 until 1913, and who lived and worked in the heart of London.
These artists aimed to reflect the realities of modern urban life in their work. Their paintings are fascinating for their spotlight on working people depicting the world of the markets or the streets and everyday commerce.
This talk particularly focuses on the leadership of Walter Sickert and the younger painters influenced by French post-impressionism.

Martin examines the diverse styles of Robert Bevan, the memorable interiors Charles Ginner and Harold Gilman. He will also discuss the various locations and the subjects important to each artist. This diversity was apparent in their exhibitions as a group in the years before the outbreak of the First World War.
The second talk in this series takes place on 18 Oct:
