After a first degree in Classics, Daniel worked as a field archaeologist with the Museum of London, and on excavations in Verona, Cyprus, and Alesia before training in Conservation at Durham University.
He joined the Ashmolean museum as conservator in 1994 working in the Cast Gallery and the Department of Antiquities, then as Deputy Head of Conservation within a unified conservation department in 2000.
He worked on a major Ashmolean redevelopment which opened in 2009 where he curated the gallery 'Conserving the Past'.
In 2016 he was appointed Head of Conservation and in 2024 became Head of Conservation and Heritage Science.
