CHRYSOS+ Project Research Assistant (casual contract, 12 weeks)

The post will be offered on a paid-as-claimed basis, up to 36.5 hours per week, for 12 weeks. It will be remunerated in arrears at Grade 5 (£16.92 - £19.67 per hour). Please note that, if offered the post, the candidate will be asked to provide proof of right-to-work in the UK and proof of identity.

This is a separate opportunity to the 12-month Research Project Assistant role advertised in the list above.

About the role

The Ashmolean Museum is seeking a Research Assistant to join the CHRYSOS+ project, an innovative interdisciplinary initiative exploring the movement and transformation of wealth during the campaigns of Alexander the Great and his successors (334–281 BC).

Working in the Ashmolean Museum's renowned Heberden Coin Room, you will contribute to cutting-edge research combining numismatics, archaeology, and digital humanities to build the foundations for a major international research programme.

 
What you’ll do

  • Standardise and consolidate a major dataset of ~9,000 gold coins
  • Ensure high-quality data through systematic validation and organisation
  • Prepare datasets for advanced analytical methods, including die studies
  • Support the development of a major research grant and monograph

Essential Selection Criteria

  • A master’s degree in Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology, or a closely related Humanities discipline, completed by summer 2026.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of ancient coinage.
  • Experience handling structured datasets, including data organisation, standardisation, and quality control.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess technical outputs critically and systematically.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly in relation to data accuracy and documentation.
  • High level of general IT competence, including confident use of spreadsheet software and experience managing digital image files.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines within a structured project environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary and international research team.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Familiarity with die studies and their methodology.
  • Experience using coin databases or digital numismatic resources.
  • Experience working with image processing software.
  • Familiarity with research data management principles and metadata standards.
  • Experience supporting digital humanities projects.
  • Experience organising academic workshops, seminars, or collaborative research events.
