In the event of a fire there will be a lot of smoke, soot and water, which itself can totally destroy organic materials. Residues can settle on other types of materials and chemically combine with them. Metals and glass can be softened or become molten and loose their form. All surfaces will have a carbon coating which is very difficult to remove.
A sprinkler system was installed throughout in the 2009 build. The museum is also linked to the fire service for rapid response.
