With Mallica Kumbera Landrus, exhibition curator and Professor and Keeper of Eastern Art, Curator of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art
This small group tour gives you a chance to explore the Colonial Views of India exhibition in gallery 29 with the curator and see 19th-century photographs of India taken by Colonel Eugene Clutterbuck Impey (1830–1904).
After photography became popular in the late 1830s, many British officials started capturing different social groups in India through photographs. These images often reinforced stereotypes that were used to justify British colonial rule in the country. Don't miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of history through these powerful photographs.

A member of the East India Company, Impey arrived in India in 1851 and took part in military actions during the Indian Uprising of 1857. After the British Crown took control in 1858 following the Uprising, he worked as a political agent until returning to Britain in 1878.
