This is the second talk in our Love on Paper series where curators focus on prints and drawings in the Ashmolean’s collection to explore themes of love, desire and romance. 

This talk covers the Early Modern period of art history when love and desire were subjects both idealised and poeticised, but also punished for their profanity. It will highlight especially the Renaissance fascination with antiquity and the nascent medium of printmaking.

Bianca will examine the ways in which key Renaissance artists like Dürer, Michelangelo and Marcantonio Raimondi expressed themes of love and desire on paper, in turn opening up new avenues for imagining the period through these small-scale, fragile works.

The Ashmolean’s superb collection of works on paper is rarely on display in the galleries.
